SITA Elizabeth Drive Landfill Gas Capture (flaring & electricity generation) - Kemps Creek project

Project Information:

SITA Elizabeth Drive Landfill Gas Capture (flaring & electricity generation) - Kemps Creek project is a landfill gas capture and electricity generation project located at Kemps Creek, approximately 39km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. It was registered in May 2013 and covers an unknown area, operating out of the larger Kemps Creek landfill facility situated on Elizabeth Drive.

Landfill gas projects involve the installation and operation of a gas collection system to capture methane generated by decomposing organic waste. Under this methodology, the captured landfill gas is destroyed either by flaring or by combusting it to generate electricity, which prevents potent greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

The Kemps Creek area in Greater Western Sydney is historically known for agricultural and semi-rural land uses, though it is now undergoing significant urban and industrial development as part of the South West Growth Area. The local environment generally experiences moderate rainfall and features poorly drained, mottled clay soils typical of the Cumberland Plain. These soils are known to have high erosion potential and relatively low fertility.

This project transitioned from a revoked Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) method and continues to capture and combust gas generated at the landfill from both legacy and non-legacy waste. It has undergone several method variations over its lifespan, most recently transitioning to the Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas Methodology Determination 2021. The project was contracted in April 2015 to deliver 336,498 ACCUs to the Commonwealth under a fixed delivery contract (CAC600132), which was successfully completed in December 2021. Additionally, in July 2022, the participant name was formally varied from Suez Recycling & Recovery Holdings Pty Limited to Cleanaway Solid Waste Pty Ltd.
