Mornington Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

Mornington Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas and electricity generation project located on the Mornington Peninsula, approximately 55km southeast of Melbourne in Victoria. It was registered in February 2013 by its proponent, LMS Energy Pty Ltd.

Landfill gas and electricity generation projects involve the installation and continuous operation of a landfill gas collection system. The standard requirements mandate capturing methane generated by decomposing organic landfill waste and combusting it, often to generate electricity, preventing this highly potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere.

The Mornington Peninsula area is known for agriculture, including viticulture, grazing, and market gardens, as well as coastal tourism. The region is considered to have moderate to high rainfall, typically receiving between 750mm and 1000mm annually. Soils in the area vary widely, predominantly featuring coastal sands, chromosols, and volcanic clays.

Interestingly, this site has a long regulatory history. It originally transitioned from a revoked legacy Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) method and underwent multiple method variations in 2015 and 2022 to continue its operation capturing gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste. The project was also part of a major Commonwealth carbon abatement contract (CAC362004) awarded to LMS Energy. This fixed-delivery contract committed over 900,000 tonnes of abatement across several of their sites and was successfully completed in April 2022.
