MRL LFG Abatement Project

Project Information:

MRL LFG Abatement Project is an electricity generation from landfill gas project located at the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall, approximately 25km west of the Melbourne Central Business District in Victoria. It was registered in January 2013 and operates over an unknown area size.

Electricity generation from landfill gas projects involve capturing the methane generated by decomposing legacy and non-legacy waste at a landfill site. By converting this captured gas into electricity, the project prevents methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere, reducing emissions beyond standard flaring requirements while simultaneously generating renewable power.

The Ravenhall area is situated on the Victorian Volcanic Plain and is primarily characterized by industrial precincts, basalt quarrying, and extensive waste management operations. The region typically experiences a temperate climate with moderate to low rainfall due to a localized rain shadow. The local soils predominantly consist of heavy black cracking clays and stony gradational soils layered over underlying basalt rock.

This project was originally registered under the name "Boral Deer Park Biogas Energy Project" before undergoing a name and participant variation in 2015. It is currently operated by Landfill Operations Pty Ltd, which falls under the broader Cleanaway Waste Management group. Notably, the project successfully fulfilled a Fixed Delivery Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC662701) initiated in April 2015, completing its obligation by delivering 494,858 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the Commonwealth by November 2017.
